Materials and Procedure

Teacher generated “Writing Goals Sheet”

Teacher generated self-assessment sheet

At the beginning of the second marking period, October 2009, each teacher will teach a whole group lesson about what good writers do when they write their stories.  The class will create a list of characteristics of a good writer such as:

-using punctuation correctly

-having dialogue in their stories

-using capital letters correctly

-creating a story that includes a beginning, middle, and end

-saying words slowly and listening for all the sounds

The students will determine what they are already doing from the list created.  Each student will pick three characteristics they think they have mastered as a writer.  Then they will determine which characteristics they need to work on.  These will be their writing goals for the second marking period.

At the end of the second marking period, January 2010, the students will look at their writing and assess what goal or goals they think they have mastered.  The students will explain how they mastered their goals by giving specific examples of their work.
